The Florida House Inn is located in the very
heart of Fernandina Beach and is the oldest
surviving hotel in the state of Florida . She
serves as the matriarch of the historic district
of Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island. We are
listed in the National Register of Historic
Places.
The inn opened her doors in 1857, built by David
Yulee and served as a boarding house for
railroad workers. During the Civil War, the area
was seized by the North and served as a boarding
house for officers. After the war ended, the
Florida House was bought by Major Leddy and his
wife.
In 1865 the Leddy family added on the dining
room and additional living space. In 1882, Mrs.
Joseph Higgins added onto the building, which
now serves as an additional eight room guest
house.
The inn proudly displays the eight flags the
city has been under along the front of the
building. A famous cast of characters have
stayed and enjoyed the inn including General
Ulysses S. Grant, Jose Marti, The Carnegies, The
Rockefellers, Mary Pickford and Henry Ford just
to name a few.
We have maintained her charm and the southern
hospitality that was once here is back again.
The inn has 16 guest rooms, an English style
pub, a parlor room, private breakfast room,
seating for 75 in our dining room, large wrap
around porches and a beautifully landscaped
garden and courtyard.
Whatever may have brought you to Fernandina we
ask you to step back in time with us at the
Florida House. We will proudly reopen her doors
December 1st, 2010.
